Angela Constance MSP for Almond Valley has welcomed the latest figures, which reveal that 8,720 Welfare Fund Payments have been given to support residents in West Lothian from July 2022 to June 2023. The Scottish Government provides funding for the Scottish Welfare Fund, made up of Community Care Grants and Crisis Grants, which is managed by local authorities to support those in need.
In West Lothian, 1,710 Community Care Grants and 7,010 Crisis Grants have been awarded, according to the most recent statistics. Since the SNP unveiled the Scottish Welfare Fund in 2013, a total of £410 million has been distributed to support 519,890 individual households.
MSP Angela Constance said:
“The Scottish Welfare Fund is a vital resource that is supporting the most vulnerable individuals across West Lothian. The fact this support remains so vital to West Lothian is a damning inditement of the harm caused by over a decade of austerity. The Scottish Government continues to deliver the support required to tackle poverty. Scotland's best future however is with independence. Independent countries like Scotland are wealthier and fairer than the UK - so the question is, why not Scotland?”
