Angela Constance MSP has condemned the abhorrent two child benefit cap impacting on more than 80,000 children in Scotland and 1.6 million children across the UK.which
In Scotland the cap has cost families £341.3 million since 2017 – almost £96 million of that in 2022/23.
The policy, originally introduced under previous UK Tory Government austerity measures, continues to push thousands of children into poverty whilst it remains in place. The new Labour UK Government with the support of all Scottish Labour MPs, has recently voted against the scrapping of of the two child benefit cap.
Angela Constance, MSP for Almond Valley, commented:
“This cruel policy affects 81,000 children across Scotland, it was introduced by the previous UK Tory Government, but the new UK Labour Government, despite promising change, has voted against scrapping the two child cap, which has impacted 1.6 million children and an additional 670,000 children across the UK if it remains in place.”
“All political parties must urgently commit to scrapping the two-child limit policy at source as part of a wider strategy to end child poverty across the UK.
I will continue to firmly oppose the two child benefits cap, introduced by the Tories but retained by Labour, and will continue to demand its abolition.”
