Angela Constance MSP has welcomed new guidance from the Scottish Government that empowers head teachers to manage mobile phone use in their schools.
The guidance clarifies that head teachers can take action on mobile phone use, including imposing a full ban if necessary, to improve student behaviour and learning.
Evidence shows that mobile phones in classrooms can be disruptive. Nearly one-third of 15-year-olds in Scotland reported being distracted by digital devices in most or all maths classes, and about a quarter were distracted by others using devices.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Jenny Gilruth stated, "This guidance allows head teachers to take necessary steps to limit mobile phone use, and I encourage them to address these issues as needed."
Angela Constance MSP commented, "Mobile phone use affects both behaviour and learning. This guidance enables head teachers in Almond Valley to take appropriate actions, including a full ban, to ensure the best educational experience for pupils."
The Scottish Government aims to make Scotland the best place for young people to grow up and get an education. This guidance supports that goal by promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment in Almond Valley.
