Angela Constance MSP Responds to Mitsubishi's Announcement of Job Reductions

Angela Constance MSP Responds to Mitsubishi's Announcement of Job Reductions

Published date : 04 September, 2024

In response to the announcement by Mitsubishi Electric that more than 400 jobs are at risk Angela Constance, constituency MSP for Almond Valley has spoken of her disappointment and deep concern for the workforce.  The decision to move to a formal consultation to reduce the workforce by voluntary redundancy  is driven by falling demand from Europe.  Mitsubishi are taking forward a radical  reduction in the workforce which will have a significant impact on the local community and local economy.

Angela Constance MSP said:

“First and foremost my thoughts are with the Mitsubishi workforce during this deeply distressing and uncertain time. This is very disappointing news for  Livingston and beyond as Mitsubishi has long been a major employer in West Lothian. Mitsubishi are proposing a radical reduction in their workforce and this is a significant blow to hundreds of individuals and their families impacting greatly  on our local communities and local economy.

“I have written to Mitsubishi Electric seeking a meeting at the earliest opportunity to discuss the situation in detail. My priority is to ensure that the workforce is supported and that all alternative avenues are explored, and the workforce is fully supported.  I am also reaching out to the Minister for Employment seeking advice and support from the Scottish Government and its agencies. I stand ready to support those affected in any way I can.

I am deeply concerned by today’s reports that over 400 staff at the Mitsubishi Electric factory in my constituency of Livingston could be facing redundancy. I will be engaging closely with both the Scottish Government and UK Government to ascertain whether anything can be done to minimise job losses, and to ensure that support reaches those who need it. In the meantime, my thoughts are with the employees and their families who are facing uncertainty at this time - and I encourage anyone who thinks they may be impacted to contact my constituency office for guidance .
