Following the devastating news that 440 highly skilled jobs at Mitsubishi are at risk of redundancy, local constituency MSP Angela Constance made a return visit to the site in Livingston on Friday 20th September accompanied by the Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes MSP, Scottish Enterprise and SCDI. The purpose of the visit was to focus on the immediate risk of significant reductions in the Mitsubishi workforce in Livingston, the impact on the local economy and what further action would support the longer-term ambitions of the company in West Lothian.
After the meeting Angela Constance MSP for Almond Valley said
“I made a return visit to Mitsubishi following the devasting news that over 400 highly skilled jobs are at risk. I was pleased that the Deputy First Minister, Kate Forbes MSP accepted my invitation to have a face-to-face meeting with Mitsubishi on site in Livingston. It is imperative that the senior leaders within the Scottish Government and their enterprise agencies understand the valuable role Mitsubishi makes to the local economy as one of West Lothian’s largest employers and globally recognised manufacturers. Changes in the European market and fall in demand for heat pumps means that both the Scottish Government and the UK Government must focus efforts to support the company by helping to grow that UK and Scandinavian market. There are actions that both governments are taking that will assist at least in the medium term and I am reassured that the Scottish Government’s enterprise agencies and Partnership for Continuous Employment (PACE) are engaging directly. As the constituency MSP I will continue to do all that I can to support the workforce at this difficult time”.
