ONLY THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT CAN BE TRUSTED TO PROTECT FREE TUITION FOR ALMOND VALLEY STUDENTS

A Commitment to Free Education

Angela Constance MSP, representing Almond Valley, has emphasized the Scottish Government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding free tuition for students. This assurance comes amid reports suggesting a potential increase in tuition fees in England.

According to The Times, under the current Labour government, tuition fees in England are expected to rise with inflation, potentially reaching £10,500 annually during this parliamentary term.

This trend raises concerns, especially following remarks from Michael Marra, Scottish Labour’s finance spokesperson, who hinted earlier this year that Labour might consider reintroducing some form of fees in Scotland. Additionally, Labour in Wales has recently raised the tuition fee cap to £9,250.

The Scottish Government has a proud history of prioritising education, having abolished tuition fees in 2007. Data from the Student Loans Company (SLC) reveals that Scottish students graduate with an average of £31,790 less debt compared to their English counterparts. Recent figures indicate that 1.8 million people in England and Wales hold student debt exceeding £50,000.

Angela Constance MSP commented:

"Seeing further tuition fee hikes in England is deeply concerning for students there. Labour's track record is clear – they have introduced backdoor tuition fees in Scotland and increased fees in Wales. It's evident: when Labour governs, tuition fees rise.  The Scottish Government’s stance is unequivocal – Almond Valley students will never face tuition fees. It’s increasingly clear that only the Scottish Government can be trusted to maintain free tuition."
