Scottish Government's Commitment to Free Tuition

Angela Constance MSP: Scottish Government Supports Free Tuition in West Lothian

Angela Constance, MSP for West Lothian, has reaffirmed the Scottish Government's strong commitment to keeping university education free for students in the area. This comes after the UK Labour Government's decision to increase tuition fees in England.

Recently, it was announced that tuition fees in England will rise to £9,535 per year, ending a long-standing freeze. This decision highlights the different paths Scotland and England are taking regarding higher education funding.

In Scotland, students graduate with the least amount of debt compared to the rest of the UK, saving an average of £31,790 compared to students in England. Additionally, a significant number of people in England and Wales are facing debts of at least £50,000.

The Scottish Government's dedication to free tuition has led to a record number of students from Scotland's most disadvantaged areas attending university. These policies ensure that higher education is accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

Angela Constance, MSP for West Lothian, stated:

"Labour governments have historically increased tuition fees, making them unreliable when it comes to keeping education affordable. This latest hike by the UK Government will burden English students with even more debt."

"During the leadership of Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, and Boris Johnson, fees remained unchanged. The fact that Keir Starmer has raised them so quickly shows where his priorities lie."

"The Scottish Government has led to more Scottish students attending university, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds. This achievement is because we abolished Labour's tuition fees, and we are committed to ensuring free tuition remains in place for all West Lothian students."
