Literacy and Numeracy Levels Continue to Grow in West Lothian’s Primary Schools

Published date : 19 December, 2024

Attainment Gap in Scottish Schools at Record Low

The Scottish Government has welcomed figures showing increasing levels of literacy and numeracy in West Lothian’s primary schools, alongside a record low attainment gap between the richest and poorest students across Scotland.

The 2023-2024 Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence Levels (ACEL) data shows the proportion of primary pupils in West Lothian achieving expected literacy levels has grown from 74% in 2016-17 to 80% in 2023-24. Expected numeracy levels in West Lothian grew from 80% to 85% in the same period.

These local figures reflect the Scotland-wide picture, with the proportion of primary pupils in Scotland achieving expected levels for literacy rising to 74% and numeracy to 80.3% this year—the highest levels on record. The ACEL figures also show that the attainment gap for literacy between the most and least advantaged pupils has narrowed to its lowest ever level across Scotland, reflecting the Scottish Government's ongoing efforts to level the playing field in education.

Commenting, Angela Constance MSP said:

The Scottish Government's commitment is evident in record-breaking figures showing increased literacy and numeracy in West Lothian and across Scotland, with the attainment gap at its lowest. This progress highlights the dedication of teachers, pupils, and families in the region.

“Scotland continues to invest more per head in education than any other part of the UK, and we have more teachers per pupil. This focus on education is paying off, with these figures demonstrating the real, measurable impact of Scottish Government policies.

“Under the Scottish Government, primary school children in West Lothian are showing what can be achieved with the right priorities and investment. We remain determined to keep building on this progress, ensuring every child has the best start in life.”
