Scottish Government Budget to Deliver Meaningful Progress in Eradicating Child Poverty in West Lothian
Angela Constance MSP stated that the Scottish Budget represents an "enormous step forward" in achieving the Scottish Government’s mission to eradicate child poverty in West Lothian, with significant progress expected as efforts begin to end Labour’s two-child cap.
The two-child cap, initially introduced by the Tories as part of their austerity measures, has been adopted by Labour despite their earlier promises to eliminate it. This policy affects 83,000 children and 26,000 households across Scotland, including 950 families in West Lothian. By ending this cap, the Scottish Government aims to lift 15,000 children out of poverty.
Commenting on the issue, Angela Constance MSP for West Lothian said:
"The two-child cap is an abhorrent policy that has harmed 950 households in West Lothian. It is another Tory policy which Labour has adopted as one of their own.
"With 83,000 children across Scotland impacted, it is right that this Scottish Government has made the decision to end the cap once and for all. This move will lift 15,000 children out of poverty and marks significant progress on the key mission of this government: to eradicate child poverty once and for all.
"It is disappointing that the Labour UK government has chosen to maintain the cap, and I would urge their colleagues in the Scottish Parliament to choose differently and back this budget; made for Scotland, by Scotland."
