Almond Valley MSP Calls for Urgent Action for NHS Lothian and Scottish Government to work together to deliver Vital Healthcare Facility for Growing Community

Angela Constance, MSP for Almond Valley, has reaffirmed her support for the community campaign for a new health centre in East Calder by attending cross-party meetings with the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Neil Gray MSP, and separately with senior figures from NHS Lothian.  It is widely accepted that the current East Calder Health Centre is no longer fit for purpose, and the focus must now be on progressing this vital infrastructure project for the growing community.

While the Scottish Government awaits the outcome of the UK Government’s spending review to determine future capital funding, Angela Constance welcomed the commitment from the Cabinet Secretary for Health to re-examine what steps can be taken to move the project forward. An important meeting is also scheduled in the coming weeks to assess whether any slippage in other capital projects could create an opportunity to prioritise investment in primary care services.

Following these discussions, Angela Constance has written again to Neil Gray MSP to emphasise the urgent need to unlock this project. In particular, she has called for NHS Lothian to complete the Full Business Case (FBC), which has not yet been delivered, and for close collaboration between the Scottish Government and the Health Board to ensure urgency and progress.

Additionally, in response to local concerns, Angela Constance MSP has written to the Directorate for Planning and Environmental Appeals (DPEA) regarding the notice of intention to grant further housing development in Mid Calder. She has raised the issue that additional housing will place further strain on local health services, reinforcing the case for immediate action on a new health centre.

Angela Constance MSP said:

I will continue to support the community campaign for a new health centre all the way. Everyone agrees that the current East Calder Health Centre is not fit for purpose. With the community continuing to grow, it is imperative that West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership, NHS Lothian, and the Scottish Government work together to find a solution that meets the needs of local people.
