Over 14 Million Free Prescriptions Dispensed in Lothians Thanks to Scottish Government Policy
Angela Constance MSP has highlighted that in 2023/24, NHS Lothian dispensed 14,520,670 free prescriptions, demonstrating the Scottish Government’s commitment to accessible healthcare. Since the abolition of prescription charges 14 years ago, this policy has saved the average Scottish household over £400 annually.
Angela Constance MSP commented:
“The Scottish Government’s decision to abolish prescription charges ensures that everyone in West Lothian can access the medication they need without financial barriers. This policy underscores our commitment to healthcare based on need, not the ability to pay.”
In contrast, recent reports indicate that in England, 68% of working households receiving Universal Credit have gone without essentials, including prescription medication, due to associated costs.
Angela Constance MSP added:
“At a time when many are facing financial challenges, it’s crucial that we maintain policies that support the health and well-being of our communities. Reintroducing prescription charges would be a step backward, placing undue strain on those already struggling.”
Notes:
• Total Prescriptions in Scotland: 114,358,700 items were dispensed by NHS Scotland in 2023/24.
• NHS Lothian’s Contribution: 14,520,670 prescription items were dispensed by NHS Lothian during the same period.
• Average Savings: With the current £9.90 charge per prescription in England, the average Scottish household saves approximately £436.72 annually due to free prescriptions.
• Impact in England: A report by the Trussell Trust highlighted that 68% of working households on Universal Credit in England have foregone essentials, including prescription medications, because of cost concerns.
