Pension Age Disability Payment Replaces Attendance Allowance Across Scotland
The Scottish Government has introduced the Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) in Almond Valley and across Scotland, replacing Attendance Allowance with a more compassionate and accessible benefit for people of State Pension age living with a disability or long-term health condition.
PADP offers financial support at two rates: £72.65 per week for those needing help during the day or night, and £108.55 per week for those requiring assistance both day and night. Unlike Attendance Allowance, PADP automatically grants the higher rate to individuals diagnosed with a terminal illness, regardless of life expectancy. This change ensures that those facing the most challenging circumstances receive the support they need without delay.
The benefit is not means-tested, meaning income and savings do not affect eligibility. Social Security Scotland will begin transferring existing Attendance Allowance recipients to PADP automatically, with no action required from individuals. New applications are now open to residents in West Lothian.
Angela Constance, MSP for Almond Valley, said:
“The launch of the Pension Age Disability Payment marks an important milestone for pensioners in Scotland, providing vital support for those living with disabilities or long-term health conditions. This new benefit reflects our commitment to treating people with dignity, fairness, and respect. By automatically awarding the higher rate to those with a terminal illness, we are ensuring that support reaches those who need it most, without unnecessary barriers. I encourage all eligible residents in Almond Valley to apply and take advantage of the assistance available through Social Security Scotland.”
